More than 800 people came to the Jefferson Memorial on Friday, Sept, 21st, to participate in a Silent Meditation for Peace as part of The International Day for Peace.Sponsored by The Zambuling Institute for Human Transformation, founded by economist and author Alfredo Sfeir-Younis, the noon-time event included spiritual leaders from Portugal, Italy, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India, as well as school children from COEUSIS International School in DC. The school, ranging from K-11th grade, has a curriculum based on peacemaking and conflict resolution.

Against a stunning backdrop that included a brilliant mid-day sun and the sparkling waters of The Tidal Basin, the non-denominational group meditated in silence with the single, pure intention of focusing on world peace. There were no signs, no protests, and no demands of any kind–just a group of conscious individuals knowing that through contemplative prayer and silence, one can make a difference in the world.

According to Dr. Sfeir-Younis, former Institutional Focal Point on human rights at The World Bank, there are numerous ways to celebrate peace, and this was a unique way as it focused on silence.  The power of silence has scientifically proven to heal and positively affect the external environment. It also helps individuals to have a unique experience of inner peace. Following the meditation, many people expressed their gratefulness for having felt a true sensation of inner peace and love in their hearts.  They felt connected to one another and part of a whole.   Washington, DC was an appropriate place to carry out this form of meditation because of the peaceful nature of Americans.
